Building Relationships

In order to share the Gospel with those God puts in your way, requires you to be purposeful and deliberate. Your riders will listen to you if you first show you are genuinely interested in them.

In Matthew 7:12, Jesus states … "So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets."

Try practicing the following 4 rules when you drive

1) Get their name and use it often during the conversation.

The conversation is more personal when names are exchanged and used. They may not remember yours and that's okay, so give them grace if they forget.

2) Be GENUINELY interested in other people.

We are not suggesting flattery, but taking a genuine interest in knowing the people you're speaking to.

3) Talk about what interests THEM.

I know it's not easy. People will usually keep talking if they believe you are genuinely interested in what they have to say. The Holy Spirit will use this time to reveal ways for you to open up a spiritual conversation with them.

4) Be a good LISTENER and encourage your riders to do the talking.

Let's face it. Everyone wants to be heard. Be a good listener by turning your ear toward them, nodding your head, asking them to clarify their statements by repeating it back to them.

Examples of Building Relationships

Kardi is new to our country. Since she is from Turkey, a mostly Muslim country, I wanted to find out what she believed.

Roger tells me his story

Roger was in the car about 20 minutes. Most of the time was spent listening to him and helping him feel normal again after 4-1/2 years of prison. Even when you mess up (the air freshener distraction) and mangle the message, you still can give them the complete Gospel in the form of a tract and a Gospel of John. The importance of meeting people where they're at cannot be overstated. God loves them in spite of where they've been and none of us is without a past.

Amir was open to read the Gospel

The part you don't see tells the story. After a 20 minute ride of getting to know each other, Amir who has no religion, was willing to read the Gospel. What he said at the end is exactly why it's important to take an interest in those people God puts in your car. They are divine appointments.

Drawing Natalie out of her shell

Sometimes it seems easier to give up when people are quiet and uninterested in conversation. Watch the other 2 videos with Natalie (here and here) to see why it's important to persist.  God will use your efforts.

Vivien Share about her work

Vivien was excited to share about her new job and was joyful about her life in general. I wanted to know why.

Building a relationship with Ivan

Sometimes people are quiet and not very talkative. It took a little time to draw Ivan out so don't give up easily. Watch the rest of the story here and here.

Sherrie and I swap stories

When people will engage with you, share personal short stories with them to further connect. Find out what interests them.

"For though I am free from all, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win more of them." "To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some."

1st Corinthians 9:19, 22
